With the introduction of the new novel, share in your blog what attracted you to this novel. What is the primary focus in your novel, and how are the main character or characters handling this situation? After reading the first few chapters, what are your initial thoughts about the book? Slow start? Jumps right in? Share your first impressions.
I am reading I am Malala. I chose this book because it sounded interesting that in different countries women are not allowed education like we are here in the US. The primary focus right now is Malala sharing her father and mothers story. It gives us background information to probably help with future things. The first few chapters of my book are kinda boring. I do not really care about Malala's fathers past. I want to know more about Malala.
ReplyDeleteI read Malala a few years ago and i remember not liking the book at all in the begining because it was to boring. You will eventually start liking the book more because it will talk more about what happens in her life instead of her fathers. Just keep reading this book and it will get more interesting as it goes on!

DeleteThe idea of fleeing from attackers sort of sparked some interest with reading the back of it. Ishmael is handling the situation pretty good and also taking care of his family a bit. My thoughts on the book are i like the intensity of the pressure of being invaded by rebels and having to run it makes the plot tense. The book jumps right into the action and i love the books flow so im impressed

DeleteThe new novel im reading is Night. I attracted to this book because it was based on a true story and that really interest me about how everything that happens in this book was true. The primary focus in this novel is how the Jews have to leave there houses and head to the forest to build trenches to stay away from the Germans. The first couple chapters there was alot going on and it just jumps right in to what is happening in the book. My first impressions was how this happened in real life and how all these Jews dealed with all of this going on. I would never want to live what they went through because i do not think i could deal with it.

DeleteI am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns but Night was my number one. I was also interested in Night because it was a true story. Reading that content must be emotionally difficult, and it seems that you could get overwhelmed easily while reading.

DeleteWhat attracted me to A Long Way Gone, was the culture it affects. In the western world, we are never informed or have the attention drawn to conflicts or issues that take place in Africa. The main focus of the novel is the conflict affecting the country of Sierra Leone and how it affected the narrators life growing up as a soldier fighting in the country's civil war.
ReplyDeleteThe book starts out pretty slow as characters are introduced and the plot develops. The book is a haunting reminder of what goes on in many nations across the world from pasts to present, and that even children are no strangers to war.
I read this book as well, i agree the book started off kind of slow but it got pretty interesting farter in after a few chapters.

DeleteI am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns. Something that attracted me to this novel was the idea of arranged marriages and I want to learning more about it. The primary focus in the book is Mariam, her mother was a housekeeper and was hooking up with Jalil her boss she ended up getting pregnant and had to leave the town because that was a disgrace to their religion. Mariam the main character is not handling the situation very good she wants to see her father more but that can not happen. After reading the first few chapter I am enjoying the book a lot it jumped right into things.

DeleteWith the book that I am reading is long way gone and there is a big jump into the book right away. i am surprised that they jump in with someone dieing in the first 20 pages. after reading the few chapter I cant believe they have already had a big jump in the book. I got kids that are probably 13 14 years old seeing someone get shot in the arm and bleed out. the kids don't know what to do in that situation

DeleteI am reading the book Night, the primary focus on the book is the Jews going to the camps. Some of the characters are just going with it because they know they cant do anything about it, and if they try to escape they will get shot. Then some of the characters are screaming and are terrified about it and they know what is gonna happen. After reading the first couple of chapters the book has gotten so much better. The beginning of the book was hard because it was such a slow start but now that things are happening it is very interesting. My first impression on the book was that this actually happened and people actually suffered during this time.

DeleteI'd say I was interested in The Kite Runner from the synopsis that we were given, where it talked about how the two friends of different social classes would slowly break apart. As of current, the primary focus is a flashback to the main character, Amir's, childhood - what his life was like in the "rich" social class and his friendship with Hassan from the "poor" social standing. From what I've read so far, I believe this book will be fairly long - and not because the book is 371 pages. The book is slow and likes to paint the picture a good amount before moving on, but I suspect after a bit of time, when I become more invested in the book, it'll be less of a drag.

DeleteFrom what I have read of night already it has been pretty slow with a lot of background info. They speak of moishe the Bradley a lot and how he is calm and stuff. I was attracted to this novel because of the movie the boy in striped pajamas. I thought that movie was good and I liked the history to it so that’s why I chose this book

DeleteWhat attracted me to a Thousand Splendid Suns was the title because I thought it sounded interesting and wanted to see were the author would go with it. The main character is not handling her situation right now to well because she is mad she cant go to school but all her other half brothers and sisters get to. My thoughts on the book so far is that its off to a very slow start and is hard to stay interested in I also think its hard to understand because of all the confusing names and languages.

DeleteI am reading the book A thousand Splendid Suns. The thing that attracted me to the book was the book cover and the fact its about someone else's culture. The situation that Mariam and Nana are in is very odd. Mariam's dad Jalil only visits her once a week for a couple hours since he has so many other kids and wives. Mariam just figured out that all of Jalil's other kids go to school and now she wants to go. This creates an issue because Nana says the only thing you need to know in life is endurance. My first thoughts on the book are its very boring and off to a slow start. But I hope a conflict rises and something interesting happens.

DeleteI am reading Night by Elie Wiesel and i was attracted by this book because i have always found the holocaust and the genocide of the Jews a great but also an emotional topic. The main Plot of this story is the Jews are being taken away by the German Nazi Party to concentration camps to either work or burn. Elie and his Family had hoped for maybe something new and had little to no fear when the Germans first came, Although as the book progressed things change in a heartbeat. They had no say in what they were able to do; Being taken away in train carts and brought to the famous, Auschwitz. There these men and children off the bat were treated like cattle and soon told to strip, shower, gather new clothes and get ready for the dreadful work that lies ahead. As i first started reading the book i thought this was going to be a boring and slow book that did not make sense to me what so ever. However i was mistaken as the book quickly picks up and leaves readers on the edge of their seats wondering how much more pain can these Jewish Men and Women can take and if there is still hope for them.

DeleteThis book was my first choice and I'm kind of disappointed that I didn't get it. So far from this, the books sounds very interesting. I like reading about the holocaust too even though it was a very dramatic time in history. It gives you a real insight on what the Jews had to go through in the concentration camps.

ReplyDeleteI chose the book a long way gone, the thing that made me choose this book was was the back sounded really interesting. the main focus of the book is the group of boys trying to escape the rebels that were killing everyone, the main characters are all freaking out. the book seems pretty interesting it jumps right in.
I am reading night I am happy that I got this book not only because it was number one on my list but because it seemed super interesting. The book gets right to the point in how the story is sort of going to play out and why. It’s also easy to know what’s going on and doesn’t jump around
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book, A Thousand Splendid Suns and the thing that attracted me to this novel was the fact that it is about the struggles of two girls in Afghanistan. It seems to be easier to read novels for me when the main characters are women. The primary focus for this novel is the struggles that two Afghan women have to face because of the Taliban. They try to make the best out of their very horrible living situation. So far in my book, one of the main character's mother just committed suicide and she is going to live with her dad. I haven't gotten past that yet, so I do not know how Mariam (the main character) will handle it all. After reading the first few chapters, I think the book had a little bit of a slow start, but once the story started, it has been quick ever since. I did not like the book at first, but I am starting to enjoy it!

DeleteI am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. The idea of arranged marriages attracted me to this book and I wanted to know more about that culture. A girl named Mariam is the main character and she used to live with her mother. Now that her mother has passed, her father sent her into an arranged marriage, hundreds of miles away. The current primary focus is on her and how she is adjusting to this new life. She is handling the situation the best she can being that she did not get dealt a good suitor by any means. This book had my attention from the start and only continues to get better. This book is also surprisingly sad and has me very emotionally invested.

DeleteI am reading Night by Elie Wiesel I find great inters in learning more about this dark time period and attempt to better understand what truly went down during those days under the Nazi third Reich. To learn what the victims of the holocausts did to survive and what happened to them and what drove the Nazi pursue that form of treatment. Elie open up the book abruptly with the deportation of Jews and the train being stopped and making them dig there own graves and proceeds to shoot them the men, women, and children. My first response wow that was quick but so was the rounding up of the Jews and anyone else Germans felt were inferior.

DeleteI 100% get what you mean by the book having a slow start. It's a bit of a deterrent, but I find that it picks up around the end of chapter four. I'm optimistic that after that part of the book, reading becomes more of "I'm reading this because I want to, rather than because it's assigned," but here's to hoping.
DeleteIt is a very slow pace book to start and long/boring. It gets better by chapter 5 more events that place a hold into Amir's past really takes place.

I am reading A Long Way Gone. I thought this book would be a little more intense at the start of the book and mellow down a little but there hasn't been much going on just some walking. I hope it becomes a little more of a fast pace kind of book.

The primary focus of the novel is for Ishmael and his five friends to survive a civil war going on in their country and they are handling it okay since they are still alive. My initial thoughts on the book were that this was going to be like a war themed book an about fighting but its changed to survival and it jumps right into details and events.

DeleteI am reading the book a thousand splendid suns by Khaled Hosseini. I wasn't necessarily attracted to this book particularly, but I do enjoy a book about holocausts or books about wars so I hope this book gets better, but so far I am not a fan of it. The main character is Mariam she lives with her mom alone in the middle of nowhere. When her mom was 15 she was going to get married to a suiter but on the wedding day her mom had a seizure and the suiter canceled the weeding. Then the mom became a house maid for a very rich guy named Jalil who then got her pregnant. Jalil had many other kids and many other wife's so once he found out she was pregnant he kicked her out because he didn't want his reputation to get hurt by sleeping with the poor. The main Character Mariam is taking the situation pretty well and is just trying to live her best life being that she only gets to see her dad once a week for a couple of hours. The book so far is very slow and confusing so I'm hoping it gets better soon.

DeleteThe book that I am reading is A Thousand Splendid Suns. The thing that really attracted me to this book was the curiosity of how women were treated in Afghanistan. I thought this book would give me some cultural insight on Afghanistan's cultures. The book is kind of confusing with all the weird Afghanistan words that they place throughout the book. Some of the words I had to look up because I didn't know what they meant. So far in the book, I kind of feel bad for the main character how her biological dad kicked the mom out to the middle of nowhere to take care of the baby because the baby was as they called her a "bastard". He only comes to visit her once a week while his other 10 children get to live with him, which I think isn't fair to Mariam.

Also on how the women are treated. the primary focus in this book is Mariam and her mom not letting her be the teenager she wants. Mariam father Jalil dose not visit her that much and he has others kids and three other wife. Mariam wants to go to school like her other siblings but her mom said that is not a women's job. So Mariam wants to leave and live with her father but her mom said she will kill herself if she does. This book started off kind of boring and did not really know what was going on and I say it was a slow start. But know it is starting to get interesting.

DeleteI am reading, I Am Malala, I wasn't here the day we got to rate and choose our books, but I think I Am Malala would've been in my top two choices. This book focuses on Malala's life after she was shot and taken to the UK to be treated for her wound and protected from the Taliban. It has been a little bit of a slow start, because she gives a very detailed explanation about her day to day routine. It is interesting though, to hear about what she experiences and how she gives lots of background information on her homeland and the history of it.

The book is about how she got shot by the Taliban and was taken to the UK for protection. Right now I think the book is a little boring because it's just background information on her parents and how her village came to be, but hopefully once it gets into her being shot and what lead up to the events it gets more interesting.

DeleteI am reading A Thousand splendid suns, and I was attracted to the book because I was curious about the different culture and how it was similar or different from how ours was back then. The main plot is about a girl named Mariam who lives with her mom outside of the big city in a Kolba. Her dad visits her once a week, but he has 3 other wives and 10 other children back home that he spends a lot more time with. It focuses on Mariam's life and how she is treated as a poor women growing up with only 1 parent in the household. She always tried to have a positive outlook on her life, regardless of what her mom said, but as the book goes on it becomes very difficult for her to keep up that act. The start was a little slow and confusing but after the first couple chapters, i finally started to understand it more, which made it more interesting to read.

It is about how she stood up for womans education and got shot in the head for it. At the moment, the book is kinda boring by how it is talking about the dad and not about her story. but when it starts talking about her then it will be interesting.

The main plot of the book is about the main character Ishmael and how his home village got attacked by rebels and turned him into a young soldier and the horrible things he was forced to do. After reading the first few chapters they were slow but after the villages got attacked the story gets more interesting.

DeleteI am reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and I chose this book as my second option because I was interested in learning how women are treated in Afghanistan. The main character is Mariam who lives with her mother, you learn her mother was a housekeeper for Jalil and he got her pregnant so she moved to the outskirts of Gul Daman. Mariam doesn't really like her mother but seems to lover her father and looks forward to the few occasions that he comes to visit. So far I am not loving the book, it's very slow and it takes me a long time to read because I have to look up all the words that I don't know.
ReplyDeleteI choose the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, I choose this book as a way to diversify my reading. I haven't been one to choose books like this before, I am more of a Fantasy/Sci-Fi type of reader. My book focuses on Afghanistan and its 30 years of hardship. Initially the book starts off slow but has events that shows how Mariam and other women are treated. I think I will like this book once everything gets going. So far it is a good book but again it has a slow start.

DeleteIn I Am Malala, the book I'm reading, Malala, the main character of the story is in a situation where the Taliban took over her home and took women's rights to education. Malala handles the situation by speaking out against the Taliban but that didn't work. She was shot but still lived. I felt that the story started off slow because all they talked about was her family and the environment. Barely anything about the story. I hope it makes more sense the more I progress.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Night by Elie Wiesel so far this book has been an eye opener to what really happened in world war two i mean the genocide is very severe not to mention the killings of the innocent men women and children. already its starting to get bad i have a feeling its going to get a lot worse. and this is the whole reason why i chose this book aside from being told by friends how in depth this book is about world war two and the Jewish genocide and death camps. I am very exited to progress in this book i just hope that it doesn't get to gruesome
ReplyDeleteI am reading A long way gone by Ishmael Beah. This novel attracted me to it because i have not anything with a setting in Africa and it just seemed like an interesting read. The primary focus of this novel seems to be the goal of staying safe and away from the rebels in the civil war. The main character has done a pretty good job handling the situation considering he is not dead and seems like he has been okay. The book was a bit of a slow start and then the rebels came, it seems to be alot of the same thing, rebels attack they run.

I like reading things that I can compare to such as the US and Malalas country. After reading the first few chapter I think the book is boring. I chose this book because I like reading about history and events that occurred during that time. its also interesting to read it from the perspective of a person who was in the area at that time and what hardships the had to face to escape it. it was a bit slow at the beginning chapter but by chapter 2 the book picked up pace very quickly.

DeleteI am reading The Kite Runner. I chose this book because it sounded interesting about two friends that are on different wealth categories and how it effects their friendship. The book goes into detail about Amir's life and how his past plays a big part in the book. The book in the beginning is such a slow boring read but by the time chapter 5 happens more events of Amir's past happens and how it effect Amir and Hassan's friendship.

DeleteI am reading the book Night. I selected this book because it's a true story during World War II. I like learning about what happened during this time period. The main focus of this novel is to tell a story about what Jews went through during the Holocaust. The main character is struggling to understand what's happening and why. To go through something this horrible is something i couldn't imagine.
ReplyDeleteI am reading The Kite Runner, I picked this book because it sounded interested and I wanted to learn more about the Taliban. I was interested in the friendship between the 2 boys, one is a wealthy boy and the other one is son of the servant. The beginning started off boring and not very interesting, so I hope it gets better. It just starts off talking about his past and their background.
ReplyDeleteI am reading Long way gone, it stuck out to me because I remember a few years ago reading this book and it stuck out to me. So far the book has started out very slow and It has no gotten into a lot of information about the war or what is happing with all of the refuges and where they will all end up going. its goin into more detail about the refuges then the actual main character.

I was attracted to this novel because I thought a story about growing up in Afghanistan would be pretty interesting. The kite runners main characters main focus in the beginning is the kite fighting tournament and the goal to be the last kite standing. The book had a pretty slow start but it has been really good so far.
ReplyDeleteI chose this book because I was told it was going to be action packed. it was a fast start and got into people getting killed quiet fast. I like how its going so far and hope it keeps up the pace.
