Blog Response #5

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

I am reading Malala, and so far there have only been problems for her father. He had trouble with a Mufti trying to get his school closed, and that he was an infidel. He talked to the Mufti and a group of men who came with him, resulting in a peaceful compromise. Had i been in his position I would have tried to make peace as well, but had that not worked I likely would have told others of the lies the Mufti spreads through the community.

    1. I agree that her father has faced a little more hardship then malala but thats also because he has lived longer than her but since she is a girl she will have more hardships now more than ever.

    2. I agree, right now Malala's struggles seem very small compared to her father.

    3. I agree that her Father faces a lot more struggles then she has. I would also try to make peace, but I don't think I would have told lies if it didn't work because I'm not as brave.

  2. I am reading I am Malala, and she has had very few struggles compared to her father. In Swat, the birth of boys is celebrated and women are kind of hidden away. Girls are supposed to be covered from head to toe in clothing, be at home, and not be educated. Malala just keeps going and talks with her peers about her struggles. Her dad has taught her not step down from what she believes in. Malala will fight for her and other women's rights. I think I would do the same as Malala no matter the consequences. I would probably gather other people to join me.

    1. I agree with how she is going through the struggles of being a woman in pakistan and about how its unfair to her.

    2. If i were in your main characters position i would also stand up for what i beileve in her situation. I would also try to get my dad more involved in helping with what i would want to get accomplished. When i read that book i think the hardships were in her everyday life.

  3. The book i am reading is I am Malala. The biggest problems she has faced was mostly for her father. He has had trouble reaching his dream for making a school for girls to be able to go to but it has been financially hard. And now its worse because a group called the Taliban came and are saying girls are not allowed to go to school. And now the are blowing up schools and killing innocent people. Her and her father try to stay positive but it is getting hard to do that. Especially when no one is able to stop them because who ever does gets killed. If i was the main character i would not be as calm as Malala and would not rebel against them for fear of being killed.

    1. Yes, i agree. Malala's dad is facing many problems. His own peers are judging him about keeping the school open for the kids. He is also risking his life against the Taliban.

  5. Ishmael goes through a lot and it shows. He is constantly facing challenges when it comes to daily life the rebels are always on his trail and he sees a lot of violence. He just keeps on moving and deals with it. He loses some people in his life because of the rebels but he just moves on and finds a way to keep going. I would try to keep moving in the direction and handle things the way he did just keep moving forward.

  6. Shelby Rice- The book i am reading is called Night. I view Elie Wiesels challenges as you will never un live them and you will always remember every little detail that happened in the past. The hardships and struggles are an everyday occurance for my main character. Being is Auschwitz and in the concentration camp is not a pleasant time. He deals with getting beat and he also gets starved because he only gets so much food a day and its only bread and soup. If i were in my main characters shoes i do not know how i would handle myself. All the day to day things that go on that i would probably not be able to handle so i think i would eventually give up if i were to get beat like he does.

    4. Hey Shelby. While our characters are not going through the exact same thing, I still see some similarities with how they are treated. Both of our characters face hardships every day. They both are abused and cannot do anything about it because they are the minority.

  7. The Challenges that Elie faces really puts him to the test during the Holocaust. As soon as he gets to the camps there is always different hard ships that the Jews are facing. I feel for the struggles Elie has. In my eyes it seems they do not have a say in anything; The Jews have been bullied around and tossed like they mean nothing in this world. If i was put in his shoes i would want to fight back with all my might although this could not happen because i would be dead on the spot. So the best action would be show little interest for the Germans so they would not pick me for work, but also i would try to take care of myself so i can just survive the Holocaust

  8. I am reading the book Night and the characters struggles were when they were getting taken out of their home to be put on the street and later got put onto trains and taken to different camps. Some of the families got split up and some of them got to stay together. Elie the main character had lots of struggles like the dentist trying to take the gold crown off his tooth, when he wondered off he was watching a lady having a affair. The man with the woman went back and told Elie's commander and Elie got beat and was told to never tell anyone or he would receive ten times more. If I was in Elie's shoes I think I would be doing the same thing he is because he is with his dad.

These hardships and struggles are and everyday occurrence for Mariam. With her not being able to provide kids to her husbands he seems to get more abusive every time she loses one of the babies. 11. I am reading A Long Way Gone, and Ishmael has been facing the conflict of a war tearing apart his country. As a rebel faction rallies against his country, many lives are lost in the destruction of their actions, many of them civilian. Ishmael's main goal was survival of every situation, which causes him to wander from village to village. Many times throughout his journey he faces death, starvation, or mass killing of his people, even his own family and friends.
If i was in this situation, i would not be able to handle it in any way possible. The act of mass killing is enough to make your stomach churn, but the addition of corpse riddled streets and grief from the death of one's family would be too much to bear.

    3. Characters in "The Kite Runner" are no stranger to war tearing apart their country. We don't see firsthand of the battles and the death of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, rather we view the hardships of being a refugee and living in a society completely different to one you're accustomed to.

The things Mariam has gone through i would never be able to put up with. I like having control over my choices and being able to have an education, and getting to work instead of staying home, cleaning, and cooking for a man i didn't even want to marry. The things that Mariam are expected to do and have no opinion about are weird to think about. The way the world is now in America is very different than how it is in the book.

      Delete
    4. I would also try to keep that relationship afloat - throwing away a deep bond to someone you've known your entire life just to hide guilt and shame is self-centered. From Amir's point of view, he's more of the victim than Hassan is, though at the same time I could see why Amir would want to sever that tie: for him to look at Hassan and think of how little he did to help would be undeniably hard to live with.

Once married, she faces abusive behaviors from her husband and later finds out he is cheating on her. Her husband forces her to cover every inch of her body, but looks at inappropriate pictures of women when Mariam does not give him what he wants. Unfortunately in this culture divorce is not a thing. Your parents decide who you marry and there is nothing you can do about it. I can't even imagine the impact that this has had on Mariam. She was born in a wedlock and her and her mom were cast out to live by themselves on the outskirts of the town so no one would see them because the father was ashamed and didn't want anyone to know what he did with a poor girl like herself. Then her Nana did suicide and she was sent to live with her dad Jalil but that didn't last long. He eventually arranged for her to get married to a man she has never met before who was way older than she was. While living with her husband, she got pregnant but many times she lost the child and with that Rasheed, the husband, would get more angry and short tempered with her and eventually became more abusive and mean. I don't know how she doesn't break down and just give up on life because this girl has gone through so many heartbreaks and let downs. Rasheed stopped talking to her and treated her bad because she could not have any kids. Laila is a pretty girl and goes to school. But one day her house blew up and her parents died. She had to marry Rasheed and tell him that the baby is his, and she is only 14 at the time. If I was in there situation I do not know what I would do. During his childhood in Afghanistan until the age of thirteen, he lives in wealth: an elegant and large house, an access to education (which is less common than you'd think), and two servants to serve him and his father hand and foot.

Only a few years after we see noticeable deterioration with quality of life with Amir and his father fleeing their riches and their country for California after the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan: their familiarity of a large manor is replaced with a small and cramped apartment, alongside baba being forced to find work at a gas station. Even then, the largest piece of information was Baba being diagnosed with cancer and, after refusing to receive chemotherapy, goes from his normal self to seizures and being a shell of what he once was in only a few short years.

Should I walk in Amir's shoes, I don't think I would be able to handle it any better than he did. Baba refusing chemotherapy would be a choice I too would contest for the same reason of "What will I do when you're gone?" It's always tough to think about the passing of someone close to you, so it would make sense for one to try to make that time together as long as they possibly can.

  34. I am reading “the kite runner”. The main character Amir has to face the guilt of not helping his best friend Hassan. Amir is a coward and decides to avoid Hassan as much as possible and tries to get rid of him instead of dealing with the real problem. If I were in that situation I’d talk to Hassan about what happened and try to fix our friendship.

  36. I'm reading the book Night. Elie Wiesel's challenges are hardships no one will ever forget, he was put through the worst kind of trauma someone can deal with. The hardships and struggles are an everyday occurance for Elie. Being is Auschwitz and in the concentration camp is not a pleasant time. He deals with getting beat and he also gets starved because he only gets so much food a day and its only bread and soup. If i were in my main characters shoes i dont know what i'd do. I would try to make the most of it and deal with what i have. i would try to have good behavior so i dont get beat. but at the end of the day it's bound to happen.

  37. I am reading I Am Malala, and most of the struggles she faces right now are because she is worried about what her dad is going through. He has had to face his school being possibly shut down, and had to make a compromise to keep it open. The compromise was that girls have to go in through the side or the back of the school instead of the front. The Taliban has now reached her village and are now saying that girls must be covered head to toe in clothing and that it is illegal for girls to go to school. Malala is standing up for what she believes just like her dad taught her and continues to go to school with other girls to keep getting an education. If I was in her position I think I would keep going to school until it started to become a problem for my family and safety.

    1. I agree that the major conflict in the story involves her dad. I am not a very opinionated person so I think I would be very afraid in this case to share how I feel.

  39. The main character Mariam struggles with abuse in here relationship because she is not able to have children which make her husband mad. If I was Mariam I would leave the relationship and try to find a safe place to live. I think the reason she is not leaving is because leaving an arranged marriage in her culture is frowned and people get killed because of it.

  40. I am reading A thousand Splendid Suns and the main characters of the book are Mariam and Laila. Mariam and Laila both have struggles, I would say Mariam has it a little harder. Mariam and her mother were known as nobody's because was the product of cheating. Her mother would blame all of her problems on Mariam. Mariam had to witness her mothers suicide. Her husband stopped talking to her and treated her bad because she could not have any kids. Laila is pretty well off and goes to school unlike Mariam. Kabul is war torn and her house was soon affected by this and was blown up, and she had to marry Rasheed. Laila is only 14 at the time and this is a lot of traumatic events for a 14 year old. These are very interesting situations for both characters and in there situation I'm not sure what I would've done. Living in America we have a lot more freedoms, especially women who aren't forced to do many of the things they are in the books society. I believe I would be so conflicted with my decisions and all that had happened I would break down. If I managed to compose myself I would try to run away to a country where I would be looked upon more equally to men and try to create my own life.

  41. I am reading the book Malala. One of the big problems in the book mostly focuses on her father. He wanted to open a school where girls could go but he ran into many bumps along the way, Such as when the Taliban came in said that girl aren't allowed to go to school. This affected Malala. Malala and her father are trying to not let it affect them but when they are blowing schools up and killing innocent people that is hard. If I was in Malala shoes I would be scared I am someone who hates conflict and this is more than conflict when people are getting killed. I don't really know what I would do I think I would stay close to my father and not say to much becuase I would be afraid that I would say something wrong.

    1. Yeah. I wish they focused on Malala's story instead of backstories and culture information.

  42. In the book “Night” Elie is faced with the challenge of being put in a concentration camp. this is one of the hardest things a human can be put through. Elie does a good job staying focused on keeping his father alive and surviving. If i was in this situation i would do the same thing that Elie is doing. Keeping whatever family i still have, with me.

  43. In I am Malala, the book I'm reading, the main character, Malala's home is being taken over by the Taliban. That means that women's rights for education are restricted. Malala did not like this and tries to speak out but sadly, she was shot. If I were her, I would form a big group of people to protest against the Taliban instead of speaking individually.

    1. In my book A long way gone, it is very similar to the situation of their homes being taken Ishmael the main character has to continue running while loosing everything.

  44. I am reading night and it’s about a 16yr old boy and his father in the concentration camp. Obviously the struggle is having to endure the tortures of the holocaust. They struggle with abuse and starvation. I simple wouldn’t be mentally capable of seeing the things that they witnessed. Like seeing alive children and babies being tossed in a fire

  45. In the book A long way gone Ishmael the main characters has a lot of problems including the rebels attacking and losing family and friends to the civil war. He faces the adversity by running and hiding and continuing searching for his family. I would basically do what he did i would continue searching for my family and friends while avoiding death.

  46. In A Long Way Gone there is lots of hardships for Ishmael like losing his family and running from the rebels just trying to survive. He faces the challenge of surviving which seems very difficult. I would the exact same thing and continue looking for my family.
